Born in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Henrique at age two moved to Rio de Janeiro, along with his family. He studied Music Education at FEFIERJ, and won a scholarship from the Orquestra Sinfônica Brasileira, which enabled him to pursue studies with Ladisdlav Bàlek, former principal bassist of the Prague Symphony Orchestra. After a year of studies in the renowned Berklee College of Music, Henrique was granted a scholarship to study double bass and composition in the centenary New England Conservatory of Music, in Boston, the oldest and one of the most reputed music schools in the USA. At NEC, he studied double bass with Edwin Barker, principal bassist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and composition with W. T. Mc Kinley, Di Domenica (class of Arnold Schoenberg), and Joseph Maneri (former student of Alban Berg).
During his years in the US, Henrique performed with various American orchestras, such as the Boston Civic Symphony, the Brookline Symphony (principal bassist) and Boston Philarmonic. In his native Brazil, Henrique was a member of the Sinfônica de Campinas and OSESP, under invitation of the eminent maestro Eleazar de Carvalho, both as first stand player in the double bass section. He was the co-founder of the Nova Sinfonietta, a classical type of orchestra which, during three years, performed with names such as Michael Haram, Miha Pogacnik and Paul Badura-Skoda. Henrique obtained both his master’s and doctor’s degree from the University of Sao Paulo, where he teaches since 1988. He was also double-bass teacher in the Conservatory of Tatui (1984 to 1987) and the Escola Municipal de Música of the Teatro Municipal de São Paulo, where he was pointed director in 1989 (through 1998), and from 2001 to 2008. In 2003, Henrique was a lecturer in the University of Richmond. In 2009, he was invited by the Department of State of the US, as a member of the International Visitors Leadership Program, as part of a program to visit 23 american institutions, such as the New England Conservatory, where he pursued his BM, the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Juilliard and Manhattan schools, both in New York.
Henrique was guest composer of two editions of the Bienal de Música Comtemporânea do Rio de Janeiro. He was also commentator of the program Classicos e Populares, of the Radio Cultura of São Paulo. In 2004, he created and directed (until 2006) the music course of the Faculdade Cantareira, an undergraduate level course where He invited as teachers some of the most prominent musicians in the country. He was responsible for the organization of the music education project for the 21 CEUs (major educational centers of the city of Sao Paulo). He was also president of the Brazilian Association of Music Schools and the State Council for the inclusion of music in the schools of the State of Sao Paulo. He was awarded the Diploma de Merito and the title of Musician of the Year (OMB/1997). He was also consultant of the University of Goias, of the FAPESP (a foundation which supports researchers in the State of São Paulo), as well as the Fundacao Roberto Marinho and the SESC Pinheiros.
Henrique is the author of various books, such as “O arco dos instrumentos de cordas” (The bow of the stringed Instruments), awarded by the Sao Paulo’s Academy of History the Clio Prize (1999). He was also a collaborator in various academic publications, such as “Uma Poética Musical Brasileira e Revolucionária” (A Brazilian and revolutionary music study), organized by renowned composer Jorge Antunes (2002). He is also the author of the “Dicionário de Termos e Expressões da Música” (Dictionary of musical terms and expressions, 2003). Henrique is a member of the Music Division of the State Council of Culture of the State of Sao Paulo.
Acting at the Conservatory Tatuí since May 2008, Defender is São Paulo, economist graduated from USP (Universidade de Sao Paulo), and his career was developed entirely in the private sector, where in the financial and / or administrative.
Initially he worked for ten years in ABDIB, trade association of heavy industry, starting as a trainee and rising to the position of Director of Economics. In this entity was responsible for the situation analysis, activity indicators, monitoring of investments in infrastructure, provides consultancy services to companies in the sector in negotiating large contracts to supply goods and services, and actions along the sectors of government responsible for formulating and implementing the investment policy.
Later he served in the EPP, a company within the infrastructure of the OAS group, doing financial modeling of hydropower projects and attracting funding for feasibility studies with BNDES, highlighting the UHE Burned (MG), today under the CEMIG. Then he worked in the BFB (Banco Frances e Brasileiro), then linked to Crédit Lyonnais, the viability of infrastructure projects on stage or being privatized, and at the same time worked as a consultant in that field to companies ABB and Construction OAS.
In mid-1990 began operations in Ita Energetica SA,, private power utility, controlled by Tractebel and CSN. Over the six years he was responsible for financial management of the turnkey contract for construction of HPP Ita, on the River Uruguay, worth $ 700 million. During this period he also served in structuring long-term financing of R $ 710 million from BNDES participation are transfers from private banks and issue of debentures; coordinated the negotiation framework, management and closure of the bridge loan from BNDES, with uptake made of $ 529 million, participated in negotiations with the IDB in order to regulate the HPP Itá for funding in the form of project finance, coordinated the collection of $ 70 million through the issuance of commercial paper operations and working capital totaling R $ 53 million. Also conducted ancillary activities such as feasibility studies, financial modeling, coordination of activities of Financial and Legal Advisors, economic and financial reports, support the Board and Council of ITASA, contacts with banks, insurers, auditors, etc..
In 2003 he entered the Network Group, one of the largest conglomerates in Brazil with the energy sector, overall responsibility for managing the generation, involving the utilities Investco (TO), Tangara Energy (MT), Rosal Energia (ES) and Commercialization Network ( SP). His activities included, besides the coordination of routine administrative and financial management, purchasing equipment for generation and transmission, renegotiation liability with Eletrobrás and buying and selling of electricity.
Between 2006 and 2008 he served as chief administrative and financial Monte Alegre Futebol SA business axis of a project for training football players of high level, targeting especially the export market, called "Campus Pelé". Conceived in Banco Fator, the project involves the attraction of funds from foreign investors and has the participation of clubs Paulista de Jundiaí, Jabalpur Santos and Lausanne Sports of Switzerland, with support from Pele in their management and dissemination.
In addition to activities related to their academic, Defender has always had great interest the media in general and journalism in particular. In this area, he served as a weekly columnist for the Folha de S. Paul from 1994 to 1996 and YouTube in 2005 - both times, making a TV critic. In 2006 he signed a weekly column of chronic sports site Soccer City. He also had articles published in Revista A (Editora Globo) and NeoInterativa.
